Bukit Panjang LRT renewal substantially done, but lift replacement at two stations runs into 2027

The eight-year upgrade that caused years of service adjustments is largely finished, but lifts at Choa Chu Kang and Bukit Panjang stations are still being replaced.

LTA says the Bukit Panjang LRT renewal that began in 2018 is substantially completed, which should mean more reliable trains, better punctuality and services that can run closer together. All first-generation vehicles have been replaced with 19 third-generation ones, the 13 second-generation vehicles have been upgraded, and trains have run on a new signalling system since November 2025. Reliability, measured as the distance trains run before a delay of more than five minutes, reached 443,000 car-km in September 2026, up from 43,000 car-km in 2018. Some work continues: about 16.6km of ageing power rails is 98 per cent replaced and due to finish by the end of 2026, station announcement and display upgrades are 88 per cent done and due in the second half of 2027, and lift replacement is targeted at all 13 stations by February 2027, with 11 stations due by the end of October 2026 and Choa Chu Kang and Bukit Panjang still to come. If you rely on a lift at either of those two stations, allow extra time and check the station notices.
