Haze: employers must protect outdoor workers, and you can report lapses to MOM through SnapSAFE

Protecting workers from haze is a legal duty for employers, not a favour, and a worker who feels unsafe can raise it with the employer or report it to MOM.

On 16 October, Acting Manpower Minister Jasmin Lau said employers must take reasonable, practical steps to keep workers safe from haze under the Workplace Safety and Health Act, including assessing the risk and following MOM guidelines. MOM has done over 400 worksite inspections since September, and employers falling short have been told to fix problems. MOM's haze page says employers should first reduce or avoid prolonged or strenuous outdoor work, provide suitable masks, and should not deduct wages or leave when they suspend work because of haze. Delivery platform operators must not penalise riders for slower jobs, for example by cutting incentives or job allocation. Workers can raise concerns with their employer or report lapses to MOM through SnapSAFE, and anyone who feels unwell should see a doctor and take medical leave as usual.
