How to pay for buses and the MRT — and the $0.60 daily fee on foreign bank cards

You can tap a contactless bank card with no registration, but a foreign-issued Visa or Mastercard costs an extra $0.60 for every day you use it. A local card avoids that.

There are two ways to pay for public transport in Singapore. **Tap a contactless bank card.** American Express, Mastercard, NETS and Visa cards work straight away — no registration, no top-up. It also works from a phone or watch wallet. Fares are billed to your card or bank account afterwards. **Or use a SimplyGo EZ-Link card**, sold at any SimplyGo Ticket Office. You top it up in advance. Two things to watch: • **A foreign-issued Visa or Mastercard is charged an extra $0.60 admin fee for each day you use it for fares.** Over a month of daily travel that adds up. If your bank card was issued outside Singapore, a SimplyGo EZ-Link card or a local card will cost you less. • Concession fares and concession passes do not work on contactless bank cards. If you are entitled to a concession, you need the proper concession card. Both methods charge distance-based adult fares, so neither is cheaper per trip — the difference is the daily foreign-card fee.
