MOM warns a company that insured only two of its staff: work injury insurance must cover every employee

MOM published the outcome of a disputed work injury claim on 13 October: no fraud was found, the claim will be processed, and the employer was given a stern warning for insuring only two employees.

MOM and the police published the outcome of an investigation on 13 October into an alleged fraudulent work injury claim by a former worker of a food services company. The police found no evidence of cheating by the worker and will take no further action, and MOM found no fraud in the claim, which will be admitted and processed by the designated insurer under the Work Injury Compensation Act. While reviewing the case MOM found that the company work injury insurance covered only two employees, although WICA requires an employer to insure all employees, and MOM issued the company a stern warning. MOM says WICA includes a process for both the employer and the employee to object before a claim is settled, so each side can present its case, and that it will not hesitate to act against false or misleading claims. If you are injured at work, tell your employer so the injury is reported; an employer or a worker who needs help can contact the designated insurer or MOM.
