Myanmar: workers who go home on leave are being stopped from returning without tax and remittance proof
The Irrawaddy reports that more than 300 overseas workers were blocked from leaving Myanmar in three weeks, mostly over the 2 percent income tax and 25 percent remittance rules.
Under rules set in 2023, Myanmar overseas workers must pay 2 percent income tax and remit 25 percent of their earnings through official channels. Since May, a worker going home on leave must obtain an endorsement letter from the Myanmar embassy or consulate in the country where they work, supported by written permission from their employer and proof of tax and remittance payments, and must submit the letter and that proof again to the Labour Department before leaving at the end of their leave. The Irrawaddy reported on 12 October that the Labour Department had blocked more than 300 overseas workers from departing over the previous three weeks, mostly for not meeting those requirements, and that ministry data shows many returnees from Singapore and Malaysia were refused and told to resubmit their applications. A Myanmar worker in Singapore told the outlet that the embassy endorsement is difficult to obtain and that many are afraid they will not be allowed to leave again once they go home. If you are planning a trip to Myanmar, check with the Myanmar Embassy in Singapore which documents you need before you book, and keep your tax and remittance receipts.
