Police investigate 259 scammers and money mules — giving away your SIM card or Singpass can mean caning
Never lend, sell or rent your bank account, SIM card or Singpass to anyone: people who help scammers this way can face caning of up to 12 strokes and lose their banking and mobile services.
In an islandwide operation from 10 to 23 September 2026, police investigated 181 men and 78 women, aged 16 to 82, as suspected scammers or money mules linked to more than 648 scam cases with about $5.2 million lost. The scams were mainly online shopping, phishing, job, fake government official, investment and lucky draw scams. Police say money mules who launder scam money, provide SIM cards or provide Singpass log-in details face discretionary caning of up to 12 strokes, and may also have their banking services and mobile lines restricted. If anyone offers to pay you for the use of your account, SIM card or Singpass, say no. To check or report a scam, call the ScamShield Helpline on 1799 or the police hotline on 1800-255-0000.
