Police warn of hotel booking phishing messages: 148 cases and at least $185,000 lost since January

Messages on WhatsApp or by email pretending to be a hotel or a booking site ask you to confirm a booking, then take your card details.

The police issued this advisory on 9 October after at least 148 cases and losses of at least $185,000 since January 2026. Scammers message people on WhatsApp or by email claiming to be a hotel or a booking platform, sometimes quoting real booking details so the message looks genuine, and ask them to verify their card or confirm a booking. The link leads to a fake website where the victim enters card details and approves a payment they are told will not be charged. Do not click links in messages you did not expect, and check any booking by calling the hotel on the number shown on its own website. If you are not sure, call the 24-hour ScamShield Helpline on 1799 or check the ScamShield app. If money has already gone, tell your bank immediately and report it to the police.
