Police warn: fake pop-ups claiming your device is 'locked' are a scam to steal bank card details

A pop-up saying police have locked your phone or laptop for a fine is fake — never enter your bank card details or pay.

Scammers are sending pop-up alerts with the police logo, claiming your device is locked for visiting illegal websites and demanding an urgent fine. If you enter your bank card details, money can be taken from your account — sometimes more than the fake fine. The real police will never lock your device or ask for payment through a pop-up. If you see this, close the pop-up, do not enter any card details, and call the 24-hour ScamShield Helpline on 1799 if unsure.
