Police warn: scammers take over WhatsApp accounts and message family members asking for payment

If a family member suddenly asks on WhatsApp for money for a course or programme, call them on a different line to check before you pay.

Police said on 28 September that scammers are taking over students' WhatsApp accounts and messaging their parents, claiming the student was picked for a youth exchange programme or AI course that needs payment. They send fake consent forms with school and government logos and a PayNow QR code, then ask for more transfers to fix a so-called error. At least 8 cases and $18,000 in losses have been reported this month. Turn on WhatsApp two-step verification, check your linked devices, and call 1799 (ScamShield, 24 hours) if you are unsure.
