Stricter scaffold fire-safety rules from 2027: timber scaffolds limited to 3 months, fire-retardant netting required
If you work on construction sites, scaffolds will be made safer from fire in stages from January 2027 — these duties fall on contractors and suppliers, not on workers.
MOM announced on 24 September that from 1 January 2027, timber scaffolds may be used for at most 3 months instead of 9. From 1 March 2027, new projects must use scaffold netting that meets fire-retardant specifications, and from 1 March 2028 the netting must be certified by an accredited body. MOM says scaffold fires can spread fast across timber and netting, putting workers at risk. If you see an unsafe worksite, you can report it to MOM.
