Your employer must insure you for at least $60,000 a year — and cannot charge you for it

Work Permit and S Pass holders must be covered for at least $60,000 a year for hospital stays and day surgery, including illness unrelated to work.

Your employer must buy and keep medical insurance for you with an annual claim limit of at least $60,000, covering inpatient care and day surgery. This includes conditions that have nothing to do with your job. Since 1 July 2023, for bills above $15,000 the insurer pays at least 75% and your employer pays the rest. Since 1 July 2025, insurers must pay hospitals directly once a claim is approved, so you should not be asked to pay the hospital first and wait to be repaid. **The cost of this insurance cannot be passed to you.** There is one narrow exception, for workers other than domestic workers: a co-payment is allowed only if it is written into your employment contract with your agreement, is no more than 10% of your fixed monthly salary, and lasts no longer than 6 months in a 2-year period. Anything beyond that is not allowed. If money is being deducted from your salary for medical insurance outside those limits, keep your payslips and speak to MOM or TADM.
